Marc Murphy is one of those rare chefs who has taken from his own experience to create cuisine which is sometimes traditional and sometimes original and, amazingly, sometimes a bit of both.Read the RestHaving spent much of his childhood and youth being exposed to the diversity of cuisines around the world, it is quite understandable that his particular brand of new American cooking takes its cues from some of the greatest methods. He was a much talked of chef before venturing to open his own New York Restaurant with his wife, Pamela, in 2004, but it was only when he did open it that he could really invest himself in his own culinary vision. The menu at Landmarc in Tribeca is well known for its numerous dishes, many of which come from different countries. From authentic haute cuisine and nourishing regional Italian delights, to those which speak of a specifically American flavor, the menu is both arresting and tempting. Even though haute cuisine and fine Italian recipes all have a rich heritage, many of the Landmarc iterations are invested with unexpected elements. Many of the best New York Restaurants are reticent to offer such a striking variety of dishes, but then many of those eateries, as good as they may be, don’t have at their disposal the versatile talents of Marc Murphy.Since opening the first Landmarc in 2004, a second, larger Landmarc has found a home in the Time Warner Center. The larger venue allows for 300 seats whereas the original offers a 100. But a 100 seats lends itself to the inherent charm of the neighborhood bistro, a charm which itself has been treated to a touch of trademark innovation.Diners can enjoy the two-storey space which has been designed to create a warm yet contemporary feel. Like the menu which takes from the traditional to create the new, it is a feast of contemporary contours and touches set among inviting natural materials. A clever use of lighting affords an intimate feeling perfectly congruous with the bistro-style new American menu. The newer 300 seat venue offers a slightly different ambiance, one filled with the conviviality of numerous diners all gathered to enjoy great food in its most exciting incarnations. One of the great pleasures of enjoying a meal at either of these fine New York Restaurants is not to have to worry about whether there will be something for everyone. Those who favor haute cuisine for a special night out might find a bowl of authentic French Onion Soup a hearty invitation to a main course of Stuffed Quail, while others may find the Smoked Mozzarella and Ricotta Fritters more to their taste.Of course, a meal at Landmarc can just as easily become a trip around the culinary hotspots of the world. Whatever you start with, you might just succumb to the need for a perfectly seared steak and one of the much revered sauces. Those wanting to sample a signature dish should head straight for the bursting freshness of the mussels which are served with beautiful golden French fries. Not content to simply offer the best cuisine, these excellent New York Restaurants have gone even further and eschewed the notion that fine dining needs to be of the elitist, exclusionary variety. The magnificent wine list, boasting extraordinary bottles as comfortably as it does the best of the trusted, is one of the most affordable among New York Restaurants. More than being able to enjoy the superb food with the right wine, Landmarc is especially suited to family meals. The kids menu is not merely a concession, but a carefully considered composition designed to excite and delight future gourmets of the most fussy kind. A Petit Filet Mignon might be just the thing for an adventurous young diner.Read Less
