2023 Tony Award Winners

Following Broadway’s return to a full season of performances, there was much to celebrate at the 2023 Tony Awards. The ceremony, held June 11, took place in Washington Heights at the United Palace.

In an industry known for both its serious and playful elements, Broadway looked to history: Parade, based on an early 1900s incident, won best revival of a musical; Leopoldstadt, which follows a Jewish family in the first half of the 20th century, took home best play; and John Kander and Joey Grey were honored for their long careers. As well, Alex Newell, for Shucked, and Some Like It Hot's J. Harrison Ghee became the first openly nonbinary actors to earn top honors. While not every show gets its start Off-Broadway, Kimberly Akimbo (which did) followed its awards at last year’s Lucille Lortel ceremony with a slew of prizes at this year’s Tonys. Read on for the winners (and nominees) in the main categories.

Shows that are not linked and bolded have finished their Broadway runs.
