Does theater matter? Some sobering answers from the internet
The weekend approaches, and your theater plans are to all appearance already made. But wait. Perhaps you’ve before that time broken your heart trying to obtain into the ridiculously long list of astounding plays in fancy productions (The Motherf**ker by the Hat, Good People, The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to…, Jerusalem, The Normal Heart, School ~ the sake of Lies, etc.), and so you’d like to take a step back to deliberate about the wider ramifications of theater in the cosmos. (Getting iced out of a settle always offers opportunity for reflection.) Suddenly, you awe: Does theater make an impact? Are we completely just obsessed with entertainment that finally lives and dies in its have a title to little bubble? Is there a passage between our values and the boards?
Nothing makes me go into a trouble-spiral about these issues like the Tony Awards complete, so this week has been specifically fraught. In Jason Zinoman’s perceptive article on Slate, he makes the put in a box that two of the above plays (Motherf***er and Good People) delineate a portrait of our contemporary body so necessary, so incisive and bright, that they actually make Broadway (and the Tonys) applicable again. Hallelujah, Jason Zinoman. Of beat, lest we forget, this was a week in what one. the CUNY folk tried to bestow Tony Kushner an honorary degree, tabled it for the cause that a non-academic board member objected to Kushner’s political science and then backpedalled like a heedless newsboy—and during the press mishegas, undivided board member said “I have none idea who Mr. Kushner is.” Zinoman points thoroughly that Kushner’s current play isn’t likewise eligible for a Tony, but stop, Kushner must be our most celebrated living American playwright, and he’s won overflow little gold statues in his gone by. So even if, as Zinoman says, the Tonys are to the point again, nothing—but nothing—can act some people pay attention. And without interrupti~ that heartening note: Have a agreeable weekend everybody!
